Making Change Happen

Everyone talks about “needing change” in education. We all know the parts that are bad, I don’t need to repeat them here. We know what’s not working, we have schools filled with great people who know what IS working. We even have great conversations about what would be better. There seems to be some idea that change is something we “need.” Maybe the idea that a new school year will be different, or another program will make a difference, or a policy will implement a shift. But change will never just happen, like that. Change isn’t an event. It’s a day, by day, moment by moment, process. It’s slow. It’s hard. It’s necessary. It will require uncomfortable conversations. it will require the acknowledgement and recognition that every single person, including every single kid in your school, matters. And matters on an equal level. It will exhaust us all. Digging into the meat of what matters. Valuing the strengths of every individual so we can all bring our very best to the table. Zeroing in on weaknesses, because that’s the only way to improve. What if every single day, we are intentional in our actions. Then? We’re not “needing” change, we’re making it happen.
