The 3Rs

When we really stop and think about what engagement looks like in our classrooms, can we define it? More importantly, can we recognize it when it’s happening? When I think about learning, I know if it doesn’t mean anything to my kids, they have no reason to learn it. It has to be personal and important with their input. Relevance. I also know that asking them to not only solve problems we have in our world, but to uncover what those problems are, is essential. After all, it’s the world we’re trying to prepare them for.  Real world experiences.  At the end of the day, if I’m plowing through material and they’re just moving through the day, the experiences won’t truly matter. If we don’t pause to take the time needed to connect with what we’ve learned, why it’s important to us, and build connections, we’ve missed the point. All of us. Reflection.   When these three Rs are in place, we won’t have those moments where kids stop to ask us “Why do we have to learn this?”  They’ll be far too engaged to worry about that.
