I’m just not sure if I know of any other field that works so hard or does so much, with so little appreciation, than education. Everyone can name an educator who changed their life, yet teachers are often the first line of fire when scores aren’t high enough, when struggle becomes uncomfortable, when the media is looking for a story. Many of us went into the classroom because of one thing: Passion for learning. One day we wake up and we’re so consumed with doing for others, that we’ve forgotten the things we love to do. We forget to learn because we’re busy focusing on ensuring that others are learning. We forget what we love because we’re helping others find what they love. But, it’s never too late to remember. Take some time. Do what you love. Take your camera for a photo walk. Plant a garden. Go on a weekend trip and disconnect from technology. Sit in the sand and read. Write a letter to an old friend. Watch old movies and drink cappucino. Take your dog for a run. Because that time? It allows you to reconnect. It brings clarity where there is fog. It takes all the ‘things to do’ and organizes them so that your passion is no longer buried. A passion that kids need to see and feel in everything we do.
Take some time today. Your students will thank you for it tomorrow.
